. host: ? writes -- josh rogin writes -- brian is with us from michigan. republican line. caller: good morning. one of the questions i have had since the beginning is where was the president and secretary of state? did they see this going down in real time? i have not heard that question asked. i hope you can answer both questions. why did these recent three or four leave the state department? what did they do wrong to leave? will they be subpoenaed, will they be asked to come and testify? guest: as for real-time surveillance, what we know now is that there was some surveillance of the attack. apparently there was an unarmed drone that was quickly deploy that captured some of the attack. we also learned that there was testimony that the deputy assistant secretary who was in charge of the embassy security was monitoring these events in real time along with a couple of other people. we are not sure whether the cia and defense department were monitoring, but it is possible they were. president obama had a full schedule. he was in the middle of the campaign that day. he was being briefed b
in michigan and he meets up with bob dole. the two of them nowhere near politics. both of them so wounded and talked all the time in that hospital about what they would do in the future. both wanted to be doctors but both so harmed that being a doctor was, at that point, just completely out of the question. they had to come up with other careers and i talked with both of them about their relationship a while back and they describe that time in the hospital. take a listen. >> i used to watch him play bridge. he was the best bridge player in the hospital. we sat around and talked about what we were going to do with the rest of our life. i said, bob, what are you going to be doing? and one thing about bob dole, he had had his life mapped out. really mapped out. he says, well, when i get back, i'll be a county attorney. then i'll be in the legislature. the first opening of congress, that's where i'll go. i said, gee, that's a good idea. >> inouye actually beat dole and said, i'm here in the congress, where are you? dole joined him and later were both world war ii heroes. this is a generation
. bush, debby dingle from mish michigan to talk about us. deb y the timing of the president's interview seems a bit like taunting. was that the point or something else? >> i don't think it was taunting and i think you continue to see the president throughout the day say we've do the to try to negotiate to get ourself an answer. he has worked and worked with republicans trying to find a solution. i think everybody agrees, i pray everybody agrees, democrats and republicans alike, that not solving this and doing over the fiscal cliff is not an option. that means everybody has to give. etches stating a -- he was stating a fact and reinforced all day today he's working towards finding a solution. >> brad, are the republicans having a sour grapes because they didn't take to the airwaves or do you think it was wise not it? >> i think it's wise not to. it's good faith to negotiate with your partners, so to speak, behind closed doors and come to an agreement and announce it when it's ready. the president negotiates and runs over and does sunday talk shows, something he hadn't done in three years
